María Corral
María Corral, born in Madrid, is an independent critic and curator.
She is currently coordinator of the contemporary art collection of the Museo Patio Herreriano in Valladolid and senior curator of the Dallas Museum of Art. She co-directs Expo Actual SL and directed the 51st Venice Biennale (2005), where she curated the exhibition “The Experience of Art.” She headed the advisory committee for the Fundación Telefonica collections (2003-2006) and was in charge of La Caixa Foundation’s contemporary art collection (1995-2002), a collection she herself had begun to create in 1985. In 2000 and 2002 she directed the Biennial of Pontevedra.
María Corral was director of the Reina Sofía National Museum and Art Center from 1991 to 1994. As plastic arts director of La Caixa Foundation, she was in charge of its exhibitions in Madrid and Barcelona (1981-1991). During the triennium 1991-1993 she served as Europe-wide president of EUROPAN (European Architecture Competitions Program). She was a founder and director of Grupo Quince, a Madrid atelier, gallery, and publisher of original graphic works (1971-1981). She sits on the board of trustees of the Reina Sofía; the advisory council for plastic arts at the Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus, Ohio; the board of trustees of the Granada Provincial Government’s José Guerrero Center; the KURATORIUM of the Neues Museum Weserburg in Bremen; and the board of trustees of the NMAC Foundation, Montenmedio, Véjer de la Frontera.
She has earned a LEO Award in New York (1992), the Cologne Fine Art Prize (1994), the KOINÉ award to an artistic career in Verona, the distinction Chevalier y Officier of l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres of the French Republic, and the gold medal of the Fine Arts Circle (2007).
