Iluminaciones Magazine

Editor: Juan Miguel Hernández-León
Publisher: Círculo de Bellas Artes
Frequency: cuatrimestral
Print-run: 1500/2500 ejemplares

The Fundación Arquitectura y Sociedad promotes the launch of Iluminaciones, a magazine published every four months by the Círculo de Bellas Artes (Fine Arts Circle) in Madrid that picks up on the spirit of critical thinking, analysis, and debate inspiring the Foundation.

Juan Miguel Hernández León, president of the Círculo de Bellas Artes and trustee of the Foundation, is the editor of this journal whose main thematic axes are “architecture, thought, art theory, and urban planning.”

Amid erratic postures, Iluminaciones advocates a breadth of views and rigorous multidirectional debate between eminent figures from all over the world.

As the publication’s sole sponsor, the Fundación Arquitectura y Sociedad will propose a monographic theme for one of the three annual issues. The magazine’s name, “Iluminaciones” is a tribute to Walter Benjamin (1892-1940).

Editorial of 1st issue:

Iluminaciones is a four-monthly magazine that endeavors to be a platform for reflection on an occupation, architecture, that currently seems to clamor for an objective examination of its activity and its anthropological, when not political, dimension, always in a way linked to the social and economic realm.

Gilles Deleuze began a painting course with the following doubt: “I am not sure philosophy has contributed anything to painting… I would prefer to invert the question: whether painting has anything to contribute to philosophy.” We take off from the same question for architecture, and try to situate ourselves on that ancient frontier between thought and practice of a discipline.

The title chosen for this project is an explicit tribute to the figure of Walter Benjamin, reader of Rimbaud, perhaps in the hope that “with combined oral and written expression the prospects for controversy of every situation can be exploited in an in-depth manner,” as this German thinker attributed to the polemicist Karl Kraus. I would like to close by publicly thanking the Fundación Arquitectura y Sociedad for taking on a long-gestating project out of friendship and intellectual affinity.
